A tribute to Michael Christian Daly & Eileen Gertrude Green,to their descendents and to their ancestors and to the many cousins

Death CertificateMargaret Daly 1846 - 1914. The youngest daughter and 6th of 8 children of Michael Daly (farmer} and Mary O'Brien. She was born in Glen of Aherlow, County Tipperary. She emigrated to Australia in about 1864.

Margaret married Thomas Parker Phillips on 23 April 1874 at St Stephen's Cathedral, Brisbane. A notice of the marriage appeared in both The Queenslander The Brisbane Courier, the local papers of the day. A copy of the original announcements is on the National Archives of Australia Trove website. Her age at marriage and at death according to her death certificate disagrees with other records including the Galbally Baptismal Register which shows her baptism in September 1846 - notably in the early years of the Great Potato Famine (1845-1852) during which saw one million people dying and about the same number emigrating from Ireland.

It would be another seven years before her next younger sibling, Daniel Daly, was born in 1853 in Lisvarrinane, Tipperary. This seven year gap in births in the family may be attributable to the famine.

Thomas, a saddler, was born in Stonehouse, Gloucester England . He was 24 years when he married Margaret. These details were provided by his brother Charles William Phillips according to Thomas's death certificate. Tom and Margaret lived in Tribune Street in South Brisbane. Margaret died 28 October 1914 at the Mater Public Hospital. Margaret was 63 years of age and died from peripheral neuritis and heart failure. She was buried the following day at South Brisbane ( Dutton Park) Cemetery.

Marriage Notice

Her death certificate records that she was born in Tipperary and was in Australia for about 50 years. It also says she had two deceased children, 1 Male & 1 Female.

Bernice says that the boy was Thomas Phillips born 4 September 1881. She said that she could not find the girl's record on Birth, Deaths and Marriage Register (micro fiche file). She continues.

"if you look up the Toowong cemetery you will find Thomas Phillips buried 6-9-1881 and with him a Phillips buried 4-3-1885. These two would have to be the children of Margaret and Thomas". [UPDATE - SEE POST SCRIPT BELOW]

Thomas died 13 years later on 19 December 1927 just before the start of the Great Depression. He is buried in the same plot. Below is the record search result provided by the Brisbane City Council.

A Post Script
I have received some more information from a descendent of Thomas Parker Phillips.

Thomas's and Margaret's 2nd child was Mary Catherine (Minnie) Phillips [1877-1906] who married William Henry Allen at St James Church Coorparoo in 1898. They were to have 5 children. Sadly, Mary Catherine (Minnie) Phillips died on 26 October 1906 which was 2 days after the birth of her last child. William remarried a few years later and died after 33 years of marriage to his 2nd wife.
